The challenges of low light event photography require a combination of camera body, lens, and speedlight that can acquire focus in near darkness, perform well at high ISO, and adjust flash power automatically.
2012 or newer Full Frame, or pro level APS-C DSLR body. (Canon/Nikon). Mirrorless systems should have phase detect autofocus capability. (Sony A7II, A7RII, a6000 series or newer have phase detect, A7SII is contrast detect only) Preference given to latest generation Full Frame bodies.
A wide aperture lens is critical to deliver enough light to the autofocus system. For Full Frame a 24mm, 28mm, or 35mm prime lens in the f1.4 - f2.0 range is ideal, with a 16-35mm f2.8 or 24-70mm f2.8 being acceptable on the latest generation FF bodies (5D4, D850, A7III, A7RIII etc.) For APS-C Bodies, an f1.4 - f2.0 prime in the 14-24mm range is ideal.
Hot shoe mounted speedlight with TTL capability, functioning AF assist beam., and Tilt/Swivel. Integrated/ pop up flash is not acceptable. AF assist beam on the speedlight needs to function properly with your camera body. (Use single shot AF mode.) A Stofen type diffuser is ideal, otherwise the speedlight’s wide angle pop out diffuser can be used and must be functioning properly.
Have the ability to capture and upload RAW 3x2 Aspect Ratio files to Dropbox, Google Drive, or other cloud storage and provide a download link within 36 hours of event completion. RAW images will be processed by us, no editing required.
Check In Photos: Typical crawl check in times range from 6-8pm on Fridays, and 4-6pm on Saturdays, occasionally allowing up to an extra half hour for late check ins. Prepare to arrive early enough to test your camera settings before check in starts. You will be photographing groups (or individuals) of crawlers just after they finish at the check in table.
Crawl and Venue Photos: After capturing check in photos, you will be crawling to all the venues on the crawl, taking an image of the venue signage (don’t forget the check in venue), and spending approximately 10-20 minutes inside capturing photos of crawlers in their element before moving to the next.
